Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
