New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
