The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
